Support and Invest in Diverse School Leadership!

Demand: Create Equitable Pathways and Robust Support for Teachers of Color

We need to respond to the increasing diversity of NYC's student population, with diverse school leadership. This lack of representation limits the perspectives and experiences brought to decision-making, hindering efforts to address the unique needs of students of color.

The Solution: We call on NYC Public Schools and the United Federation of Teachers to collaborate and take immediate action to address the following:

Transparent and Equitable Leadership Pathways:
• Create a Transparent C-30 Process: We demand a more transparent and equitable C-30 process, with clear criteria and procedures for selecting school leaders.
• Support In-House Talent: Encourage the development of in-house talent by creating and funding programs for mentorship, coaching, and professional development opportunities for aspiring leaders of color.
• Advocate for Transparent Data on Diversity: We want transparent data on the diversity of teachers in school leadership roles, including Peer Collaborative Teachers and Instructional Coaches.

Robust Mentorship and Coaching Programs:
• Expand Mentorship Programs: Expand mentorship programs that pair aspiring leaders of color with experienced mentors who are well-matched culturally, instructionally, and according to mentee’s needs. These mentorship experiences should be deep, impactful, and intentional.
• Prioritize Peer-to-Peer Collaboration: Support peer-to-peer collaboration and coaching at all schools. Recruit and retain educators who reflect the diversity of our schools for these roles.

By working together, NYCPS and the UFT can create a more equitable and inclusive school system that empowers teachers of color to reach their full potential and serve as role models for students.
Join us in demanding a more diverse and representative school leadership for NYC!
