Tell the Board: Appoint Members of the Black Student Achievement Committee!
Senate Bill 15 (SB15) called on CPS to establish the Black Student Achievement Committee as a permanent body within the Chicago Board of Education. Its primary goal is to improve academic outcomes for Black students, who have historically faced systemic underinvestment in the district. The committee aims to address disparities by developing evidence-based strategies and using data to assess and enhance educational policies.
Key tasks include:
• Creating strategic plans to promote academic equity
• Setting measurable goals
• Providing regular progress reports to ensure accountability and transparency in addressing Black students' needs.
While we are grateful that the first steps in establishing the committee have been taken by designating Jitu Brown as the chair, the work of the committee is moving too slowly amid federal challenges to our students as the Trump administration launches an investigation into CPS’s Black Student Success Plan.
We Demand:
1. President Hardin appoints the remainder of the committee by June 26th
2. The committee is diverse in both skill sets and geographies as required by the law, SB15
3. The committee reports the following by August 28th: Initial strategies and plans; Intended metrics for success; Dates of regular reporting for the 25-26 school year
