Demand Our Federal Government Bring Back Fired Staff!

The Trump Administration is using the ongoing government shutdown to lay off even more federal workers at the U.S. Department of Education. The department lost half of its staff in March, and the Reductions in Force (RIFs) of 466 additional employees since the shutdown represent one-fifth of that remaining workforce.

Students with disabilities, low-income students, English learners, and students of color will feel the impact first–and the most. The very offices designed to protect their rights and fund their schools have been nearly eliminated.

• The Office of Special Education (OSEP) has been reduced by 95% since the start of the year and is now staffed by fewer than six people
• The firing of staff in the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) and those who oversee Title funding will only exacerbate existing inequities in student access to resources and opportunities.

While a judge has temporarily halted layoffs at federal agencies, the fight is just beginning. We should be expanding resources for our schools, students, and families, not ripping them away.

Contact your Senators today and demand that they hold the administration accountable for reinstating fired staff at the U.S. Department of Education.
