I’m a NYC educator, and I’m writing to urge you to support $200 million in baseline funding for NYC Reads and NYC Solves in the city budget.

The data speaks for itself: students who are not reading proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, and early math skills are among the strongest predictors of long-term economic stability. Early literacy and numeracy skills are not optional—they are foundational. That is why NYC Reads and NYC Solves matter so deeply, and why their early results are already showing extraordinary gains in both reading and math.

As these initiatives expand, funding for professional learning and implementation has not been permanently baselined. Schools are relying on philanthropy and year-to-year allocations to sustain what are now core, popular, and evidence-based programs.

To build on what’s working, our classrooms need stability. I urge you to support $200 million in dedicated, baseline funding, that’s protected from annual budget fluctuations, to ensure:
- Ongoing professional learning and coaching for educators
- High-quality, culturally responsive curriculum and materials
- Strong family engagement
- District-level implementation support
- Targeted interventions and high-impact tutoring for students who need it most
