New York State: Improve Financial Literacy!
SIGN THE PETITION, and call on the New York State legislature to pass legislation or the New York State Education Department to issue a regulation to mandate the successful completion of a personal financial literacy course for all New York State high school students to graduate from high school in the state.
Thousands of New Yorkers graduating high school each year lack essential knowledge of critical financial tools because New York does not require any separate personal financial literacy course for high school students. This needs to change. All students should learn about insurance, banking, credit, and investments, regardless of where they are from or where they go to school.
A mandated financial literacy course should include, among other topics, instruction in automobile purchasing, home owning/renting, health and life insurance, banking, borrowing, credit, and responsible retirement investing.
