Unfortunately, being a teacher today means doing more work for less pay than your similarly educated peers. In fact, research shows that teachers make 27% less than other college graduates, and one-third of teachers earn less than $60,000 per year.

All teachers deserve to make more money, and the opportunity to advance in their careers without leaving the classroom.

To address this, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Pay Teachers’ Act, which would incentivize states to set a minimum $60,000 teacher salary and create innovative career ladders that allow teachers to take on additional responsibilities and roles and receive additional compensation.

I am writing as an educator and Constituent in support of the Pay Teachers Act.

New data from Educators for Excellence’s annual teacher survey, Voices from the Classroom 2025, finds that 33% of all teachers, and 42% of Gen Z, believe that higher salaries are the best way to retain a talented and diverse workforce, making it the top choice of incentive for both groups.

All teachers deserve to make more money, and the opportunity to advance in their careers without leaving the classroom. The Pay Teachers’ Act would incentivize states to set a minimum $60,000 teacher salary and create innovative career ladders that allow teachers to take on additional responsibilities and roles and receive additional compensation.
